CHI CHI OMEGA CHAPTER
It is time for action. Over the last fifty-five years, Americans have appealed to a higher sense of democracy with each election. The Civil Rights Movement and the subsequent passage of the Voting Rights Act offered African-Americans the right to participate in the voting process. Systemically turned away from voting, African-Americans have consistently argued for their right to vote.
Now is the time to address the poor standard of healthcare that has negatively impacted people of color especially during this pandemic. Covid-19 has highlighted the long-standing health inequities in this country disproportionately affecting black and brown people.
Now is the time to address the inequities in education that have widened the achievement gap and eroded our trust in the educational system. Our political system has consistently ignored the challenges and needs of African-American children and schools, and Indianapolis is no exception.
Now is the time to address implicit bias and police brutality that has plagued our community and destroyed our families. We heard the cries of George Floyd for eight minutes and forty-five seconds; his cries of “I can’t breathe” shook America’s moral conscience before our very eyes. It has never been clearer: now is the time!
Now is OUR time to turn the tide and require our elected officials to honor our collective voices. We must unite to ensure our voices are being heard...and not just on the national level. We must vote for every school board, city council, and sheriff, to name a few. Each of these positions creates laws and policies that directly impact our lives and the lives of our children.
Since 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has committed herself to economic, political, and social advocacy. Chi Chi Omega Chapter’s dedication to these principles is an ongoing endeavor that is rooted in social justice, equity, and power to the people. If you are asking, what can I do, the answer is quite simple:
-
-
Research the Candidates.
-
Make a plan to VOTE EARLY.
-
Take 3 people to the polls with you!
Indianapolis NOW IS THE TIME! Now is the time to be heard! Our values are on the ballot this November. Our children’s access to quality education and healthcare is on the ballot. Chi Chi Omega Chapter stands ready to Rock the Vote this fall. Will you join us? In the words of John Lewis, "Ours is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. Ours is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part."
